Newbie here. I must say that the theory behind Jabber and open source IM is all
very nice, but the actual implementation is way behind the intention.

Jabber says it's compatible with proprietary IM services like AOL, MSN,
Yahoo, etc., but I have been looking around for Yahoo IM compatibility
how to and can't seem to find it. I'm getting very tired and will
probably uninstall Psi and just run Yahoo IM. After all, all the people I
know seem to run it and I don't want to take too long before I can chat
with them.

All in all, user hostile setup and not ready for mass rollout.

Hey,

well, it is a Transport on your server. The Jabber.org server hasn't got any transports up and running.
So if you are looking for a server with support, try im.flosoft.biz . It has MSN; Yahoo; AIM; ICQ.

If you want to run your own server, you could try Openfire. It has many transports included.

Greets,

Florian Jensen

Thanks for your reply, but I found what I was looking
for on CNet's Download.com. It's called Miranda and on
SourceForge.net

http://sourceforge.net/projects/miranda/

Downloaded and installed it. In 30 seconds, I was on
Yahoo's IM network.

This is what most people need, as they already have
one of the proprietary IM accounts already.

Almost installed Trillian though...

This thread indicates a severe misunderstanding in what Jabber is. I'm having a hard time figuring out where to even begin on this one...

How about some simple facts:
Jabber is an IM protocol.
Yahoo is an IM protocol.
Psi can connect to Jabber.
Miranda can connect to Jabber and Yahoo (and MSN, and and and...).

The thread seems to conclude that Jabber is something unfinished or inferior compared to Miranda. What nonsense. Miranda is software, Jabber is a protocol. Miranda can even connect to Jabber!

I won't blame the user. Jabber's marketing is horrible. It's unfortunate that any user should come to us so confused.

You forget that Jabber can also carry transports.
Transports are like mini bridges
a jabber server with a transport lets you carry a connection to that other protocol so you can use that protocol and jabber on the same account but not intermixed
