Hello,

If I have a Jabber account, and like to connect someone who is Gmail user,
do I need a Gmail account, too, using a transfer?
Or can I connect directly?
I herad, Gmail is somekind of Jabber, too?

If my Jabber Server does not offer transfers, can y use transfers from any other
Jabber-Server who does?
How can I make such connection?

Thanks a lot

Yes exactly, Gmail is simply the Jabber server of Google, nothing else. So you can contact through Jabber anyone who has a gmail account (and uses it for instant messging) whether yourself have one or not.
Just send him an invitation through your Jabber client and he will receive it (the same way, he can add you as a contact with your jabber address).

Yes you can use the transport service from any server (as long as they accept subscription from external accounts, but most accept it, from what I have seen). To subscribe to such a transport, it will depend on your client. What is it?

Thanks for reply, Jehan...

Good news. A reason to stay with jabber.

I use iChat on OSX, but have PSI to generate transfers (what is impossible with iChat
but a transfered contact can be seen in ichat after he is generated).

To generate a transfer using a different Jabber server than the one I am logged in...
Do I need to establish a connection to the other Jabber server ? How can I do that?

By the way, I am looking forward to make Audio and Video-chat on Jabber.
Any suggestion for Jabber clients?
My preferred client is iChat, but dont know if there are compatibility issues.

Apparently you have already subscribed to transport using psi. The only thing is that probably it will look services at your server by default. The only thing to change is then to specify another server. But of course, you have to know this server. As far as I know, there is no research feature (as the jabber server is open, a server won't know all other servers of course). Some lists exist on the web. There was one on the old version of jabber.org, but apparently not anymore on the new website.

So if you know a server who hosts a service you like (and if this server allows external users to use it), then simply click right on your account in the psi roaster, then "Service Discovery". Then in "Address", write the server you are interested in. It will then display the list of available services.
From this point, you will find your wanted service, let's say it is "IRC transport". So right click on this item, and "register".

As for Audio chat, I am not sure which, but I am pretty certain that some clients have already implemented the jingle protocol (the one derived from the Gtalk implementation of audio chat)... But maybe is it not yet in any stable release?
