Trying to start account, but confused

Dear all,

I am confused. What is the relationship between Jabber.org and (e.g.) ejabberd and Psi? Whose User Name and password do I use for what, and in particular for iChat?

Jabber.org is a service you can register with. Another example of such service would be Jabbim (http://www.jabbim.com/) or Google Talk.

ejabberd is a server software you can use to build your own service (and Jabber.org is running this particular piece of software for its IM service).

Psi is one of many XMPP/Jabber clients out there, just like iChat or Adium.

And, of course, you use YOUR username and password you chose when registering with Jabber service (iChat cannot be used to register, use Psi or Adium).

you can register an account on any public server, also named IM Services. One example is jabber.org, other is im.flosoft.biz.
Your account will be then username@jabber.org or username@im.flosoft.biz.

As this is an opensource protocol, there are several servers like ejabberd and Tigase. These should not be confused with the before mentioned IM Services. You can use these servers to set up a Jabber server on your own dedicated machine for example, or inside your company network.

Hi I am new here & have just regegistered & got jabber account (I think). I also have downloaded psi so I can use ichat with liver messenger etc, as most of my friends are on messenger. How do i transport MSN/Live messenger onto psi? Thanks.I have tried typing in MSN etc in address part of service discovery box, but nothing is happening. The ejabberd was transported ok, but nothing happens when trying to transport other messengers. I would much appreciate step by step advice as we have only just got imac. Many thanks.

You need to be on a server which has a MSN Transport. Jabber.org has no transports available.

If you are looking for a server that has a MSN transport, try im.flosoft.biz
