Okay, I'm new to everything here. I downloaded Openfire and I have my server set up. Now what exactly can I do with it? Can I connect PSI (which I have also downloaded) and create my own IM server? If so, what username do I use. Maybe I'm just confused what Jabber really is.

The real question: How to set up everything for a total noob.

Can anyone help me!?!

Hello,
if you have no really good reasons to install an own jabber server, why you did it?
Here (http://www.jabberes.org/servers/) is a list with public jabber servers, use one of them.

You CAN run Openfire or eJabbered on your own PC and conect with a client to this server, yes, but if you don't have any good reason for it, why?

As far as I understand, you try to install the server on your desktop? So without a DNS name?

Then I would add one thing: if you don't have a fixed IP, you won't be able to be contacted by your friends (if your "server" changes address every connection...). Moreover even if you add a fixed IP, I don't thing having a Jabber ID with an IP is so "nice" (but this is just aesthetics consideration).

Anyway you will have many problem while having a Jabber server on a machine not done to be server. So unless this is for development or tests, this is not adviced.

right. Why do you want your own server exactly? You just want to use your own domain? There are other alternatives to do this, without having to setup and administer a local server.

The main problem will be DNS, if it's on your own machine. You will need a domain name, or atleast a DNS name, so that your server is accessible from the outside, which means, you need to setup your network to allow connections to it.

Well, yes, this was for use with my public website. Would this be the same as a DNS server?

I was told to use Jabber, But I really have no clue where to start.

Use with your public website? So you want to use your own domain as a jabber server. Do you have a dedicated server or VPS where you setup openfire?

Dedicated server as in the server that is hosting the website? Because I do have one of those, since its required to run the website anyway. But I don't know about a VPS. I am more into HTML and Javascript rather than this stuff lol.

Could I use the server of the website for the jabber server?

Hum... that's not just an anecdotic installation. So if you don't have this knowledge, I am not sure this is a good idea. But anyway this is your choice and after all, there is no time to begin to learn...

A "dedicated" server is a single server just for your site and none else (so one single physical machine just for you). Usually this is what providers compare to "mutualized" server, which is a common server for several websites.

What a dedicated server allows you is a complete control of administrator of the machine. Usually if this is a Linux server for instance, this will mean give you a root access to the system with shell systems like ssh. Do you have this? In other words this can mean you can install whatever you want and do whatever you like on this machine (even mess it completely, this is your right).

You said that you already set up Openfire, didn't you? If so, what did you do exactly?

Looks like I was way off track here. ROFL. I'm looking for a LDAP server, which again, I have no clue about, but is what I'm told that I'm supposed to use! Anyway, thanks for all the help people! Sorry for wasting your time. :(
