Hi,

I am looking for an IM for the company.
We have two departments in two different cities. And we want to connect our employees so they can chat between them and maybe sending a file (not important but could be)
But what is really important is that the administrator can restrict the suerlist. So that they can only chat with certain people. This because we had MS/YM and suddenly our employees where more chatting with their family/friends than with people of the company.
Can Jabber do this?:
- Only chatting between some persons (controlled by administrator)
- conecting between the tow companies only

We have both static IPs.

If it is possible what do I have to do? Do I have to set up a server? Or just installing the client version is enough?

Many thx already,

Johny

Hi,

if you have 2 static IPs, you could set up the server internally with a DNS.

Regarding the limitation: It's easy to limit it to just chatting within the company (all registered users on the company server) by disabling S2S.

So you have to know if you want to set up the server yourself, in-house, or go for a hosted solution.

Thx Florian,

I havenīt got a clue what would be the best solution. Please advice.
I have seen the requierements of the server and they are very low. So adding a PC to it isnīt a problem.( it is behind a firewall, but I guess that is oK), The easiest woul just using the clients, but if the ony solution so I can block other account, except ones I have in a list, is installing a server version I will do that.

Just another question, can you limit the users if the server is here and the other part of the company is in another city?

thx already for responding

Don't get it.

In what way do you want to limit the users?

What d you mean with "donīt get it", do you refer to the cliente solution or installing a server one?

We just want that nobody can chat with a person who isnīt in a special list. We had before MSN and everybody started to hat with family/friends. So we want to make a kind of list where the administrator can decide who can o canīt chat to ertain people. Somethng like the permissions of the folder in windows.

Back to your first reaction: sould I or not install the server software in my server?

Thx

I would try Openfire. It's easy to use, and as far as I know, it supports special user permissions.

Ok, I will try that one. I just started to try Ejabberd, but cancelled it. I will first try Openfire.

Iīll get back with the results!
